This report explores the impact of the National Child Mortality Database (NCMD) programme in 2024.

2024 was an exceptional year for the NCMD. We’ve  published a range of publications, including two thematic reports (on deaths of children with a learning disability and autism and asthma and anaphylaxis), alongside a data release and two academic papers.

Our experts spoke at a range of events, sharing our data with professional groups including GPs, paediatricians and the child death review community. We also delivered a series of webinars aimed at professionals, sharing insights and data to support ongoing improvements in practice.

Our work influenced national policy as well: data from the NCMD contributed to updates in both the Homelessness Code of Guidance and the National Suicide Prevention Strategy, as well as safety labels being added to baby bath seats.

The NCMD acknowledges with thanks the hard work of Child Death Overview Panels around the country, and of the staff who make up our team, in the last year. Without their efforts, none of the achievements detailed in this report would have been possible.
