Like many organisations working with colleagues in the suicide prevention and charity sectors, we were deeply saddened to hear of the closure of PAPYRUS, the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide after almost 30 years of work in this area.

At the National Child Mortality Database, we had the privilege of working alongside PAPYRUS on a number of projects, including our thematic report into suicide in children and young people, where they brought invaluable expertise and lived experience perspectives to the conversation. Their commitment to ensuring that the voices of young people and families were heard also helped shape our work on meaningful engagement and co-production.

We know that behind every charity are passionate staff, volunteers, supporters, and the families who have shared their experiences in the hope of preventing future tragedies. Today, our thoughts are with all those affected by this news, particularly the PAPYRUS team and the young people and families they have supported over the years.

The closure of PAPYRUS is a significant loss for the suicide prevention community. Their legacy lives on in the countless lives they have touched, the awareness they have raised, and the determination they inspired in others to prevent young suicide.

Thank you, PAPYRUS, for your partnership, your expertise, and your unwavering commitment to making a difference.
