Advice regarding masks and young children

Please share with anyone interacting with families of young children…

Face masks are NOT considered to be suitable for children during the COVID-19 pandemic – particularly very young children, but they are unlikely to be beneficial to older children too:

  • Homemade masks tend to prevent the spread of the virus to others, rather than offer protection to the wearer.
  • If not used properly, they can increase the risk of spreading and catching COVID-19 as inexperienced users tend to touch their faces more often (for example, to adjust the mask).
  • Masks can be dangerous to very young children and babies as they can cause asphyxiation. For babies, it is far better to use a rain cover or alike on prams when out and about.

The Government’s advice on this matter states: “Face-coverings should not be used by children under the age of two, or those who may find it difficult to manage them correctly, for example primary age children unassisted, or those with respiratory conditions. It is important to use face coverings properly and wash your hands before putting them on and taking them off.”
