The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued guidance on self-feeding baby pillows and prop feeders which present a risk of serious harm or death to infants.

For some years the NCMD has been working with OPSS to ensure that the best evidence about self-feeding baby pillows and prop feeders makes an impact on policy and practice. In November 2022, a product safety alert was issued by the UK Government concerning these products.

But what does the guidance mean for families? OPSS says that consumers – the people who buy self-feeding baby pillows and prop feeders – should not only stop buying these products, but should also stop using them and dispose of them safely.

And there are actions that businesses must take as well. Because OPSS judges that self-feeding baby pillows and prop feeders CANNOT be made to follow product safety regulations, businesses must not sell them. If they do, they are breaking the law.

So what can you do? Well, we need your help to spread the word. You can find OPSS’s official consumer safety alert here. If you, or anyone you know, has been using these products, this can help you to let them know that they are unsafe.
